Introduction
Since 2017, Kizik has built its name on pioneering stylish hands-free shoes you can step into without bending down, pulling on the heel, or crushing the back of your shoe. Now, the Kizik Athens Golf shoe brings that convenience to the links in a slip-on shoe with the looks and function of a modern athletic golf shoe.
The Kizik Athens Golf shoe utilizes patented HandsFree Labs® Cage® technology, a soft responsive foam midsole, water resistant materials, and a multi-directional spike pattern (or “lugs” as Kizik calls them) designed to provide a comfortable hands-free experience when working on your game. With a $149.95 price tag and Men’s sizing from 7 through 14, The Kizik Athens Golf shoe is suitable for a wide range of golfers whether managing a mobility issue or merely looking for a more convenient shoe to slip on and off in the clubhouse.
Looks
When I first learned of the hands-free Kizik Athens Golf shoe, I pictured a plain, brown, chunky orthotic shoe like my junior high science teacher was famous for wearing. What I didn’t know was Kizik has always done a wonderful job incorporating its HandsFree Labs technology into clean and classic casual and athletic shoe designs so it covertly blends into the overall look.
The patented HandsFree Labs® Cage® integrated into the Kizik Athens Golf shoe continues this combination of functionality and style. Rather than being a hinderance to the design, the HandsFree Labs® Cage® adds a sharp modern design element to the heel of the Kizik Athens Golf shoe in tones that contrast with the upper materials. The dark plastic-feeling HandsFree Labs® Cage® looks almost futuristic as it wraps the water resistant heel material underneath.
In both the White/Surf the Web colorway (available in Men’s and Women’s) and the Harbor Mist/Dark Shadow colorway (Men’s only, seen here), water-resistant materials on the upper are arranged with no-sew overlays and minimal branding that presents a modern yet neutral and clean aesthetic similar to the TRUE Linkswear Antigravity golf shoe [review HERE] and Ecco Biom C5 golf shoe [review HERE]. Although the Kizik Athens Golf shoe uses a variety of materials, they use similar tones, so despite the mystical color names both colorways remain sleek and uncomplicated. I actually felt stylish the first time I stepped into these at the driving range for an initial test drive. [See Price / Buy]
Comfort
With zero break-in period required, the Kizik Athens Golf shoe comes straight out of the box feeling like spongy marshmallows for your feet. No size adjustments needed as the fit is true to size.
The Kizik Athens Golf shoe looks like a soft responsive running shoe with its thick midsole, but because it’s a golf-specific model, I wasn’t sure I’d get that cushy running shoe reward when I stepped in. Once I slipped my toes in and stepped down on the heel, all doubt was erased. I didn’t want to take them off. There’s a pleasant squishy feeling with each step, especially in the heel area. It’s a soft, light, and airy feeling, not necessarily an energy producing sensation. Do I have to take these off?
I figured my feet would realize the cushiony benefits of the Kizik Athens Golf shoe when walking 18. They did. What I didn’t anticipate was the positive impact the Kizik Athens Golf shoe would have on my lower back while loitering on the tee box, waiting for the green to clear, or watching my buddy three-putt every green. When standing, I found myself rocking back and forth to feel that mushy sensation like I was a little kid standing in a bounce house. The benches scattered throughout the course were no longer sought out. These are golf shoes?
At 4.75” across the toe box (the widest point), just under 3” at mid foot (the narrowest point), and 4” across the heel, the footprint of the Kizik Athens Golf shoe is definitely wide through the toe box, mid foot, and heel area, but doesn’t appear oversized to the eye. That wide toe box and heel are intended to ensure stability throughout the swing. Although stable, I prefer a tighter locked down feeling around my foot to give the feeling of more structure and to limit movement during aggressive swings and transitions.
Performance
The Kizik Athens Golf shoe certainly attains its objective of providing a hands-free shoe for golfers who have mobility issues or desire an easier on/off shoe. With a mere step down on the heel, the shoes easily slip on without any bending over or tying required. My usual car trunk bench remained idle. No post-round wrestling match to undo the double knots I so aggressively fashioned on the first tee.
Kizik refers to the spikes on the Kizik Athens Golf shoe as “multi-directional lugs designed to shed debris and enhance traction on varied terrains.” The traction on dry ground is adequate as it’s similar to the my FootJoy Flex 2025 shoes. However, the traction doesn’t have the bite of the 2026 FootJoy Pro/SL golf shoe [review HERE]. Because of the middle of the pack traction, despite being water resistant, this isn’t the pair I’d grab for a rainy round. That said, the Kizik Athens Golf shoe offers wonderful traction for the range, chipping area, and practice green, and without the worry of damaging any floors if you wear them inside to the 19th hole.
The Kizik Athens Golf shoe serves up extreme cushion and a heavenly feel as you stroll the course. Although beyond comfortable, the 1.5” thick midsole at the heel (1” at the balls of the feet) made me feel like I was standing taller and higher over the ball. That taller feeling made it more difficult to stay down through the swing. My typical left miss turned into a low right miss as I continued to stand up out of my stance.
On full aggressive swings, when trying to get maximum distance from the club, the soft cushiony midsole reduced my ability to feel the ground and drive maximum power from my lead led. My swing has a medium tempo without an aggressive transition, yet the ground reaction force that generates power and speed was still mitigated by the soft rebounding foam. Having said that, for golfers with mobility issues who are used to a springier midsole and/or have a smooth fluid swing that doesn’t require much ground force, this issue may be moot.
It’s worth noting, the Kizik Athens Golf shoe comes with a 30 day test period. If the golfer isn’t satisfied with the performance, they can be returned for a full refund. No risk. [See Price / Buy]
Conclusion
The Kizik Athens Golf shoe delivers what it promises: a hands-free golf shoe that’s stylish, exceptionally easy to slip on, and comfortable enough to make it feel like you’re floating through 18 holes. The HandsFree Labs® Cage® technology is a legitimate, and cool looking, benefit for golfers with mobility limitations or those tired of hassling with their shoes in the parking lot or locker room.
Not only does the Kizik Athens Golf shoe nail its functionality, it does so with clean, modern materials that are water-resistant and help repel grass stains. The tradeoff is performance on moderate to aggressive swings. While delightfully comfortable, the soft elevated midsole reduces ground feel, and the traction is better suited for dry conditions, practice sessions, and casual rounds than for swinging aggressively or playing in wet weather. The Kizik Athens Golf shoe isn’t the ideal choice for golfers seeking maximum stability, a locked down feel, and more connection to the ground, but for golfers who prioritize comfort and convenience, it’s one of the most unique and enjoyable spikeless golf shoes available.
